Shikkui.
Purely Japan-made, 100% natural materials
JAPAN SHIKKUI.
Tap into Japan's Wisdom.
JAPAN SHIKKUI is made from one of the highest-quality limestones found in Japan.
Fired over a long period of time
through a traditional salt-baking method
using limestone extracted from the limestone mine of Tochigi Prefecture's Sano City,
a Shikkui-making city since 1854.
Lime processed this way becomes a whiter and purer Shikkui.
A product that is as authentic as possible is made
through the use of 100% natural and local materials.
Japan's Shikkui
-
What is Shikkui?
Japan's Shikkui is believed to have existed since 700. It is a wall plaster that is primarily made from natural materials. Because of its superb durability and fire-resistant quality, it has been widely used in shrines, temples, and castles. It is a building material that represents Japan as evidenced by its use in Japan's major landmarks, from the Western-style architecture such as the Rokumeikan, the Prime Minister's Residence after the World WarⅡ, the Kyoto State Guest House, to the Tokyo Station.
-
Lime
The only self-sufficiently sourced mineral resource in Japan. It is made from limestone extracted from Tochigi Prefecture's Sano City mine.
-
Starch
Made from natural seaweed. Mixing in starch allows for a smooth coating process.
-
Fiber
The fiber for plastering made of plant fiber such as hemp prevents shrinking and cracking when the Shikkui dries up.

Purely Japan-made Shikkui
Local Shikkui made from 100% natural materials.
Form mining to manufacturing, everything is done in Japan.Limestone is extracted from the mine owned by the producer of JAPAN SHIKKUI. All of the processes are done in Japan, from firing through the traditional method of "salt-baking" to kneading to mix the lime, starch, and fiber. The development of JAPAN SHIKKUI is very particular in following the techniques and manufacturing methods that have been passed on to the present; "Authentic Shikkui" is made because nothing else is added other than the raw materials for Shikkui: lime, starch, and fiber.-
Mining
The mining process is the foundation of lime creation. No other minerals or clays are added by focusing on extracting only from the producer's mine which delivers a higher quality limestone.
-
Traditional Process of "Salt-baking"
Limestone and coke are placed inside the furnace and heated for 3 to 4 days after adding a small amount of salt. This process allows the crystals from raw lime to develop, and by volatalizing the impurities of the limestone, a high-quality lime is produced to allow the creation of a more durable and whiter Shikkui.
-
Kneading Process
Consistency in quality is maintained by measuring everything that is going to be used to achieve the right amount of hardness and by kneading them in the factory. This is the essential process in quality control.

Superior functionality achieved through natural materials
Incombustible, antibacterial, deodorizing. Above all, purely Japan-made.
That's why it’s made from user-friendly natural materials-
Incombustible
Shikkui uses raw materials that are inorganic, giving it a high fire-resistant quality that makes it strong against fire and prevents it from burning. Fire will not spread even if it occurs and there will be no emission of hazardous gases from the natural materials.
-
Antibacterial
The main raw material of slaked lime is sterile because of its high alkaline content which breaks down and prevents the growth of molds and germs. Even though it has a superior volatile organic compound (VOC) adsorption, it does not contain VOC.
-
Deodorizing Effect
In addition to having an effect of suppressing the propagation of molds and germs that produce odor, its porous structure made of many fine holes also has an effect of deodorizing by absorbing odor.
-
Humidity-control Effect
It maintains a comfortable level of humidity because of its characteristic that absorbs moisture when humidity is high and releases moisture when humidity is low.
-
Environmentally-safe
It dries up and hardens over the years, absorbing CO2 in the air. It is a recyclable material that follows a natural cycle of returning back into imestone.

Design
Lasting beauty
that creates an impression.-
Applicable to Modern Architecture
Its matte quality makes it easy to render a finishing pattern because of its smoothness and softness. The matte texture can be easily applied on modern architecture such as homes and facilities.
-
Highly Workable
JAPAN SHIKKUI is pre-mixed with water so there is no need to mix it on the spot.
-
Maintenance
Cleaning it up is easy using materials such as a rag, eraser, and sandpaper. It does not deteriorate over time or due to the effect of ultraviolet rays.

System Description
Yamachi Corporation Co,. Ltd.
Yamachi Corporation was establised in Hokkaido in 1941 as a roofing tile manufacturing and sales business as well as a wood distributor. Afterwards, the company began wholesale trading of building materials and sold imported building materials as well as new building materials sourced in Japan. Along with its celebration of 60 years in business, the company aimed to "select fine objects, things, and tips with reasonable quality and price, and improve the value of architecture" by delving in the development of Shikkui, Japan's traditional building material. Within a year in the beginning of the Ansei era (1984) after partnering with a company that produces Shikkui, JAPAN SHIKKUI was born, a Shikkui that maintains its functionality and ease to use and adapts to modern day architectural design.
